Temple lies in bed with a towel wrapped around her "naked loins" (145) listening to the dogs outside her door. Miss Reba sits on the bed drinking giving Temple cold comfort by telling her how desirable Popeye is. A maid (Minnie) comes in with a tray of alchohol and the dogs leap on the bed. Miss Reba forces Temple to drink some alcohol. Miss Reba and Minnie leave the room to call Doctor Quinn for Temple. Temple locks the door and gets back into bed.
