Summary:
An older Bayard reflects back on how he thought at the time that he would never be "The Sartoris" to Ringo. Though they were both 24, in a way, Ringo had changed "even less" than Bayard had since killing Grumby; he thinks it may be because Ringo had "outgrown" him, changed so much when he and Rosa were trading horses with Yankess that Bayard "had had to do most of the changing just to catch up with him" since then (215-16).
