Description:

Northern Virginia was the scene of a great many battles during the Civil War, including two at "Manassas" - the name by which Southerners referred to the battles of Bull Run (as the Union Army identified them); but "Pickett's charge" was in Pennsylvania, at "Gettysburg," as Quentin notes when he corrects Shreve's mistake (289). The regiment that Sartoris and Sutpen raise fights in the Civil War as part of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, although near the end of the War the unit is among the troops that Lee detaches to reinforce the Army of the West as it retreats through the Carolinas.
