When the action of a story takes someone into a place they've never been before, for example the "strange country" that the chase of the deer reaches in "Race at Morning" (301).

This is whenever a character arrives or departs to communicate a message of alarm. JB

This term is for occasions when people leave a place in order to hide something from their neighbors, as when Flem and Eula go to Texas so that the birth of her illegitimate child can be kept secret from the population of Frenchman's Bend. SR

I needed a way to convey characters who secretly leave at night for some reason - Miss Quentin in S&F, but there is also Lena Grove and Joe Christmas in Light in August and probably others. Perhaps this could/should be a recurring trope? -JBP

I added this for "The Old People," 206.5, to describe how the narrator sees Sam Fathers growing smaller and smaller as the hunting party leaves him behind. I don't really like the term that I chose but I couldn't think of anything else. LW
