Summary:

Quentin remembers a conversation with his father. It seems to have taken place between the day Caddy lost her virginity ("and now this other," 177) and the day he leaves for college ("you'd better go up to Cambridge right away," 178). When Quentin raises the possibility of killing himself, his father reminds him that his mother has always wanted him to go to Harvard "and no compson has ever disappointed a lady" (178).
