Summary:

Before midnight, Mink returns home with the belief that he has restored his usual sleep cycle. He lies down and realizes at first that he will not sleep. But freed from the cries of Houston's hound, "his head and lungs [are] filled with that roaring silence" he had not enjoyed for seventy-two hours, and he begins to dream. As the sun rises, he forces himself to wake up (256).
