After Ike calls the young woman "a nigger," she explains how in fact she is directly related to him - and to Roth - through the tangled history of the McCaslin-Beauchamp families. He gives the infant she is holding the hunting horn that he was given years ago by General Compson, then advises her to "go back North" and marry "a man in your own race" (345). She gets the last word, which is "love" (346).
