Summary:
Cass tells how the same God whom Ike cites - and that McCaslin names variously as "Arbiter," "Architect," "Umpire" (244) - apparently allowed their ancestor Old Carothers to acquire the land for himself and his descendants, who have "kept it for fifty years" now (244). (There is a drastic inconsistency in Faulkner's dates, since later in the section it appears that Old Carothers must have been in Mississippi by 1807.)
