Cass is the great-grandson of Old Carothers McCaslin and first appears as the nine-year-old narrator of “Was.” Sixteen years older than his cousin, Ike McCaslin, Cass becomes Ike’s surrogate father after Ike’s father dies in 1879. Since Cass is descended from Old Carothers by the “distaff” (5), or via McCaslin’s daughter, Cass would be expected to play a less prominent role in the family legacy than Ike, who is descended from McCaslin’s son. Ike, however, turns over the McCaslin plantation to Cass and Cass’s descendants, Zack and then Roth Edmonds.
