Wasn't sure what to do about the "era," as the Sutpen sage spans three. I put it for Civil War because the event begins in that era before summing up what came before and after. - JBP
Summary:
Bayard recaps the story of Thomas Sutpen, a "cold ruthless man who had come into the country about thirty years before the War" who had assumed command of John Sartoris' regiment after John was voted out by the men; like "everybody else," he had "lost everything" in the war, but he returned and "set out singlehanded to rebuild his plantation." Sutpen had no interest in politics, Bayard says, and refused to have anything to do with the "night riders" Sartoris had helped organize to keep blacks in line (222).
