Summary:

It is not possible to date this event, except that Cora says it is based on what she and Addie talked about "one day" (166). What Cora talks about is Addie's lack of grace, despite, she says, the way "Brother Whitfield . . . singled her out" for salvation (166). She accuses Addie of pride, and calls Jewel Addie's "punishment" (168). Addie replies that Jewel "is my cross and will be my salvation" (168). When Cora realizes Addie is saying that Jewel will "save" her, she kneels down and prays for her.
