Bayard Sartoris is the narrator of "Vendee," though as in the other seven stories that he narrates, he is telling the story some years later. At the time of this story, Bayard is seeking vengeance for the murder of his grandmother Rosa Millard by Grumby and his gang of outlaws. Earlier he has taken a shot at a Yankee - with comic effect. Here, although his inexperience remains on display, the seriousness of his quest and the violence of its outcome feel like a step in his growth toward manhood.

Where Grumby and his men had made camp that was recently vacated, indicating that Ringo and Bayard are very close behind them: "a fire still burning and a hog they had not even had time to butcher" (110).

This is the spot where Grumby and his men camped for a night near the end of the pursuit in The Unvanquished. When Ringo and Bayard come upon it, there is "a fire still burning and a hog they had not even had time to butcher" (110, 176) - details which indicate how close the two boys are getting to the gang.
