Jefferson gets its first automobile in about 1905, about the same time cars began appearing on the American landscape - and about halfway through the long history recorded by the Yoknawpatawpha fictions. The fictions don't register that event until the last four novels, but it's a sign of Faulkner's increased interest in the larger story of Yoknapatawpha in the last decade of his career that the event is mentioned in all four.

The route from the Mississippi River landing to Doom's Plantation is covered by Herman Basket, Sam Fathers' "pappy," and Doom in "three days" (348) traveling by wagon. Since they camp "on the road at night" (348), it can be inferred that much (if not all) of the route is on roads.

A landing is a place on a river where a boat can dock to load or unload people and goods. This landing is where Doom disembarks after taking a steamboat up the Mississippi River from New Orleans.
