For most of Yoknapatawpha's history, the Jefferson railroad station serves as the portal by which people come to and go out of the county. In "Knight's Gambit," when Charles Mallison passes through Jefferson on his way to basic training in Texas, his mother boards the train there to ride with him as far as the next junction (252).
