New York is mentioned four times in the novel: as a reference point for measuring how much more of the world the soldiers who went from Yoknapatawpha to serve overseas during World War II have seen (193); as the hometown of "young men from Brooklyn" who attend southern colleges on the G.I. Bill and sell "tiny confederate battle flags" at Saturday football games (194); as the location of the "East Side sweat-shops" where the clothes that the Yoknapatawpha children of Negro and poor whites are made (192); and as one of the northern and western cities to which the Negroes who formerly farmed the land have moved in the 20th century (193).
