Biography:
The house that the Mitchells live in was built, the novel's narrator tells us, by "a hillman who moved in [to Jefferson] from a small settlement called Frenchman's Bend" (24). Unlike the houses of the town's older families, the house is builds is conspicuously close to the street, which leads Miss Jenny to say he "built the handsomest house in Frenchman's Bend on the most beautiful lot in Jefferson." Like Flem Snopes, this unnamed hillman begins as a "poor white," though somehow acquires enough wealth to build the house; unlike Flem, he abandons his attempt to move up in class after two years and moves back "to the country" (24).
