Description:

Ratliff grew up on a tenant farm a mile away from Ab Snopes, who like Ratliff's father were share cropping land that belonged to Old Man Anse Holland. It is unclear where in Yoknapatawpha Holland's property is. The text says Ratliff "had been born and raised not far away" (85), but since Jody Varner has never heard the name Snopes before the novel begins, it can't be too close to Frenchman's Bend; to get from Holland's to Jefferson, one passes through Whiteleaf - these are the clues we used to put it on the map, but (like the assumption this same location is the "home of kin people" whom Ratliff spends a night with, 85), this is our speculation.
