Jason drives to a drugstore but it is locked. A passing man tells him there isn't any drugstore open now. He asks the man when the northbound train runs and the man tells Jason at 2:30 PM. Jason gets back in his car and waits. "Two negro lads" pass and he asks if they will drive him to Jefferson. He offers to pay one dollar and then two but they say they can't get away. Jason continues to wait as people pass. "A negro" comes up to his car and asks if he is the person who wants a ride to Jefferson. Jason tells him yes and the negro says he can drive for four dollars. Jason agrees.

Summary: 

Jason returns to his car, finds the drugstore in Mottson locked, nurses his headance while looking at the passersby, and hires a black man to drive him back to Jefferson.
