The full name of the college that is mentioned in Flags in the Dust is Sewanee: The University of the South. Affiliated with the Episcopal Church, it is located in Sewanee, Tennessee. Both Horace Benbow and his father, Will, graduated from it as "honor men" (176) . (The character of Gavin Stevens, whom Faulkner created at about the same point that Horace disappears from his imagination and who has a number of similarities to Horace, goes to Harvard University instead.) Jason Compson thinks of Sewanee in The Sound and the Fury, comparing it ambiguously to Harvard (196).
