According to Temple's watch, it is 10:30 at night; she has been in the room for two hours after the doctor leaves. At 10:30 PM Temple hears a man and a woman go into the room next to hers. Shortly after she hears Miss Reba hammering on the door with her tankard and shouting. Popeye opens the door to Temple's room. Popeye comes up to her in the bed and jerks the covers back. Temple tries to scream, but Popeye covers her mouth. He crouches beside the bed and begins to make "a high whinnying sound like a horse" (159).
