Notes: 

While John, Bayard, and Ringo are sitting on the porch they spot approaching Union soldiers. Sartoris quietly makes his way through the house while Ringo and Bayard go around back to ready Jupiter, the horse. Just as Ringo and Bayard are trying to saddle the horse a Yankee soldier comes charging down the hill. Colonel Sartoris jumps on the horse's bare back, they charge through the barn's half doors with "broken planks whirling and spinning around them when they went out of sight" (34).

Summary: 

In the evening the people at Sartoris see "about fifty" Yankees riding toward Sartoris. The Colonel hurriedly invents a plan to elude them.
