The "Pope" on the novel's list of Civil War generals on both sides who had heard the "shrill hackle-lifting" rebel yell in battle is General John Pope, who was in command of the Union Army at the Second Battle of Bull Run (known in the South as Second Manassas, 188). (He almost appears in Faulkner's first Yoknapatawpha fiction, but is not there when Jeb Stuart and Bayard Sartoris raid his headquarters.)
