Summary:

This passage deploys verb tenses that imply it is both happening (Sam "had not moved") and being remembered by the boy at some future moment ("And I remember how," 210). It is a mystical moment, during which the old Indian and the white boy could be seeing either a deer with tracks "pretty near as big as a cow's" (211) that the other hunters don't see or, perhaps, the spirit of the wilderness itself. In any event, Sam salutes it with a Chickasaw word as "Olah, Chief," 210).
