Memphis in "Hair" (Location)

Memphis is the closest large city to Jefferson, and often appears in the Yoknapatawpha fictions. Both Susan Reed and, presumably, the narrator travel to "a hospital in Memphis" for different kinds of treatment (144). And when Hawkshaw regularly disappears from town with the money he's been saving, other men assume he is spending it "among the fleshpots of Memphis" (141) - a reference to the city's many bars and brothels.
