Description: 

This side-street restaurant is a regular fixture in the Snopes trilogy, and it passes from Ratliff to Flem, who uses it to build his small-town business empire. When it is first mentioned in The Mansion, it is still owned by Ratliff and is described as a "small dingy back-street eating-place" (35). After Flem takes possession, the novel refers to it as a "Dirty Spoon" (214). The "canvas tent" that Flem erects behind it is his first residence in Jefferson (140).
