After shooting himself in jail, Crawford Gowrie lies in the Caledonia cemetery beside the brother he killed. Aleck Sander appears in the Square wearing "a pair of zoot pants" (232). The crowd in town is dense and noisy, leading Gavin to speculate on the nature of "the American" man's relationship with the automobile and with "the American woman" (234). When Lucas enters the office, Gavin tells him he must thank Miss Habersham in person for helping to free him.
