At home again, Chick goes up to his room, followed by his mother, who tells him to try to "let go" of what has happened over the last two days (187). Instead, as he lies in bed and perhaps falls asleep, those events circle through his thoughts - especially what he has seen about "his native kind his native land" and his previous ambition to be remain part of that collective (white) South presenting a "united unbreakable front to the dark" (189).
