Summary: 

Cora recalls talking with Addie about her (Addie's) lack of grace, despite, she says, the way "Brother Whitfield . . . prayed for you" (167). She accuses Addie of pride, and calls Jewel Addie's "punishment" (168). Addie replies that Jewel "is my cross and will be my salvation" (168). When Cora realizes Addie is saying that Jewel will "save" her, she kneels down and prays for her.
