Summary:
In his jail cell, Cotton is examined by a doctor. He then tries to tell the Negro prisoners in the next room about Houston's body "coming to pieces" (164). They tell him to "hush up" (164). The story ends as Cotton smells the food - coffee and ham - being brought upstairs for the inmates, and wondering if "them niggers" will be fed first (164).
