Summary: 

Buck finally gets the bidding started by giving Eck a horse on the condition he start the bidding on the next one. Henry Armstid and his family arrive by wagon, and Eck begins his first bid for one and then two dollars. The newcomer interrupts Buck who takes the new arrival as an opportunity. Armstid's wife repeatedly pleads with her husband not to bid, and he verbally repels her and then violently slaps her hand. The wife announces their poverty, and Armstid turns furiously upon her.
