Summary:
Flem Snopes returns to Frenchman's Bend with a rustler named Buck Hipps and his fierce ponies. Bearing a gash on his face, Buck attempts to show that they may look "pretty lively now," but that they are "good, gentle ponies" (301). Just as he finishes his demonstration, a second pony slashes his vest into half. Jody directs Eck to help Buck put his ponies in the lot across the street.
