Summary:
Mink finishes cleaning his shotgun and returns to the house to eat in the dark and then to lie on a pallet bed in an empty room. The howl of Houston's hound disturbs him and, for ten minutes, Mink lies motionless listening to the dog's cries of grief before getting up and leaving the house.
