Summary:

The three ledger entries following the notice of Old Carother's death sum up the biographies of the three slaves that he brought with him from Carolina to Mississippi: Roskus, his wife Fibby, and their son Thucydus. All three were "Freed" when their master died, but none wanted to leave the plantation. Thucydus refused the "10acre peace" of land bequeathed him in "fathers Will," and the $200 Buck and Buddy offered him, choosing instead to work and earn his own manumission (252-53).
