Summary:
For a second time the narrative looks into the future, this time to wonder whether and how Sarty's understanding of his father might change as he gets "older" (7). The narrator does not say how much older, so we have to speculate about a date for this speculative event, but it is interesting that even as it evokes the future in this way, the narrative recalls events from thirty years earlier, during the Civil War.
