Though Maryland did not secede from the U.S. to join the Confederacy, it was a slave state in 1858, when, according to the story she tells in 1869, Miss Jenny Sartoris waltzed with J.E.B. Stuart at a ball in Baltimore. Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland. Stuart was a cavalry officer who during the Civil War became one of the Confederacy's most famous military heroes.
