The second man who rides in the truck that carries the moonshine that Lee Goodwin makes from Frenchman's Bend to Memphis literally rides "shotgun" - as the truck pulls away from the Frenchman's place, "the second man lays a shotgun along the back of the seat" (22). He teases the driver about his impatience to get back to his woman in the city.
