Cabins on Outskirts of Jefferson in As I Lay Dying (Location)

This icon represents the several "negro cabins" that border the road into Jefferson "on either hand" (229). When the people who live in them smell the corpse and appear as "white-eyed" faces that come "suddenly to the doors," the novel includes the black population of Yoknapatawpha for the first time. It is presumably in this section that the "three negroes" who pass the wagon also live (229).
