When Major Kaye writes to tell Johnny's Aunt Jenny about the circumstances of his death in combat, he mentions that Johnny's remains are buried in a cemetery "just north of Saint Vaast," which he hopes won't be shelled again (530). There are over a dozen places in France named for Saint Vaast, a canonized sixth century French bishop. This "Saint Vaast" is most likely Neuville-St. Vaast, just west of the village of Vimy, where the Canadian army had an important victory in April 1917. This Saint Vaast is also near Arras, where the Allies had a base.
