The ex-slave Sickymo would dilute stolen grain alcohol with water and sell it in pint bottles from a hiding place under the roots of a big sycamore tree behind this store. Although the text doesn't specify an exact location, we have chosen to place it with the other stores near Courthouse Square.

In "Lion" and Go Down, Moses two hunters travel by train directly from Hoke's to Memphis. When characters in other fictions travel by train from Jefferson to Memphis, they have to change trains north of Yoknapatawpha. Faulkner drew only one railroad on both his maps of the county, so presumably he forgot or simply ignores that fact in these two texts - or, as Charles S. Aiken suggests, he imports the western branch of the real Illinois Central Railroad into his county (see Aiken's map in William Faulkner and the Southern Landscape, 163).

A slave market in Cold Water, Mississippi, where Theophilus McCaslin ("Uncle Buck") buys Percival Brownlee from the slave-dealer Nathan Bedford Forrest. There is a real town called Coldwater in Tate County in northwestern Mississippi.

According to the McCaslin ledgers in Go Down, Moses, this slave market in Cold Water, Mississippi, is where Theophilus McCaslin buys Percival Brownlee from the slave-dealer Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1856 (250). There is a real town called Coldwater in Tate County in northwestern Mississippi. It is about 35 miles south of Memphis, where the real Forrest had a slave-trading business before the Civil War.

When Ringo sees this calvary unit riding up to the plantation, he exclaims them to be "the whole [Union] army" (26), but it's more likely they comprise a single regiment (or less). After Bayard and Ringo fire a shot in their direction, an unspecified number of these soldiers follow the two boys back to the Sartoris plantation and even enter the house in search of them.
