Description:

When Major Kaye writes to tell Johnny's Aunt Jenny about the circumstances of his death in combat, he mentions that Johnny's remains are buried in a cemetery "just north of Saint Vaast," which he hopes won't be shelled again (530). There are over a dozen places in France named for Saint Vaast, a canonized sixth century French bishop. This "Saint Vaast" is most likely Neuville-St. Vaast, just west of the village of Vimy, where the Canadian army had an important victory.in April 1917. This Saint Vaast is also near Arras, which while contested also was an Allied base. We think that a soldier like Major Kaye would be more likely to refer to a battle site than a resort town or abbey (other possible namesakes) when explaining the grave's location, even to someone who had no idea what he meant.
