Jason drives Miss Quentin to school. He picks a fight with her when he notices she does not have her books. She reminds him that Caddy pays for her stuff, but Jason disabuses her when he reminds her that Caroline burns the checks. He criticizes how she dresses and her makeup. Upon realizing that Compson money may have bought her clothing, she tries to rip her dress off so she can throw it in the street. Jason stops her and then threatens her: "I'll make you sorry you ever drew breath." She says, "I'm sorry now." They argue about her "slipping around," which is something she denies, but Jason won't hear it. When she gets out of the car, Jason says, "If I hear one more time that you haven't been to school, you'll wish you were in hell." She walks off without looking back.
