Negro Hollow|Freedman Town in The Mansion (Location)

Identified as "Nigger Hollow" in The Sound and the Fury and "Freedmantown" in Intruder in the Dust, this "section" of "all Negro homes" lies between the Square and the railroad tracks (38). In The Mansion, Faulkner describes this area of Jefferson as "peaceful" and emphasizes its recent modernization. Where in his earlier fiction, the road leading through this area of town becomes a dirt road, now the section is more like the rest of town, "even with electric lights too" (38). The "small dingy back- and side-street stores which catered mostly to Negroes" are presumably located on the edges of this section (362). Toward the close of the novel, Mink re-enters the town through this same section, moving from the tracks of the rail to the first "single lonely street light" (447) and seeing a black boy on a bike.
