Description:

Usually called Courthouse Square, "the square" (234) sits at the center of both the town of Jefferson and the county of Yoknapatawpha. In addition to being the seat of local government, it is the site of many of the town's businesses, including, in all likelihood, many of "the stores" out of which various townsmen emerge to watch Willy's wife walk "along the street" (237). Since this story implies that Willy's drugstore is on the square, we have located the "curb" across the street where Job sits there (233). And throughout Digital Yoknapatawpha, we use the Square as a default location for events in Jefferson that we cannot otherwise assign to a specific place; thus in this story, we use it as the site of the unnamed narrator's narration.
