Biography:

In Chapter 17 Gavin Stevens creates a list of the "cognomens long and splendid in the annals of Yoknapatawpha County" - the county's most prominent families, socially and historically: Varner, "or Sartoris or De Spain or Compson or Grenier or Habersham or McCaslin" (284). A few pages later in the same chapter his revised list of the "names long in the county annals" refers to "Sartorises and Benbows and Edmondses and Habershams" and some unspecified others (293). When he creates a similar list in Chapter 20, he leaves Varner off the list and adds Sutpen, Edmonds, Beauchamp and his own family, Stevens (332).
