Description:

This location includes the three Civil War locations mentioned in the novel. 1) The site of Carolina Bayard Sartoris' death. Chronologically, the setting is "prior to the second battle of Manassas" -- or Bull Run, as northerners would say (10). Geographically, this puts it in northern Virginia. 2) The place in "Virginny" where the Confederate regiment from Yoknapatawpha voted John Sartoris "outen the colonelcy," as Will Falls puts it; this happened early in the War, but the novel gives no other clue to where it happened (21). And 3) Lexington, Virginia, where Virginius MacCallum went in 1861 to enlist in the "Stonewall brigade"; as Faulkner may have expected his readers to know, Lexington is the site of the Virginia Military Institute, where Thomas Jackson taught before the War began and he earned his nickname at the first battle of Bull Run (332).
