Description:

In “Tomorrow,” Gavin Stevens and Chick Mallison visit Varner’s Store. Mallison describes: “So it was just sundown when we drove up to Varner’s store in Frenchman’s Bend Village; again a man rose from the deserted gallery and came down the steps to the car. So we sat on the gallery of the locked and deserted store while the cicadas shrilled and rattled in the trees and the lightning bugs blinked and drifted about the dusty road” (102). It is at Varner’s Store that Isham Quick explains Stonewall Jackson Fentry’s relationship to the Buck Thorpe and Stevens finally understands why Fentry refused to declare Bookwright innocent of Thorpe's murder. Varner’s Store is also the place where Quick remembers seeing Fentry watch from the road as the adult Thorpe, drunk and violent, occasionally came out on the gallery.
