Summary:

Bayard steps outside onto the porch and looking in the window, he sees Simon, who had been John Sartoris' body servant during the war, squatting on a stool beside the coffin. He touches the coffin, and turning his head, Bayard "saw his eyes roll red and unwinking in his skull like those of a cornered fox," which in turn causes Bayard to feel grief, regret, and despair (241).
