As they approach the river, the Sartoris party witness a chaotic scene of former slaves rushing toward the river shouting "Glory! Hallelujah!," Union infantry crossing a bridge, and soldiers trying to push back the throng, one officer exclaiming that the army was about the blow up the bridge; as the bridge explodes, the wagon slides into the river and Bayard sees what appears to be the corpse of a dead Union soldier.
