Biography: 

A group of people suffering from the lack of work during the Great Depression. The narrator refers to them as "other men among us now whose families are in want" who, "since the last few years, cannot find work" (64). Most of these men are able to maintain some degree of respectability by attaining work as salesmen of "minor articles like soap and men’s toilet accessories and kitchen objects"; they are often seen in town carrying their black sample cases.
