Biography:

We don't know if the "man plowing in that field" when Paul and Elly returned to their car owns the farm, or is a sharecropper or field hand (207). But because Faulkner often includes the term "Negro" when referring to an African-American character, and because Elly is particularly nervous about this man's having witnessed her tryst with Paul, it seems likely that he is white.
